In the year 2007, when a group of farmers in a remote village in Gujarat make their children dance on the street for money, they draw the attention of an itinerant dancer called Saeeda. In search of a rich patron who can make her respectable and successful, she is abandoned by her lover and brought to meet Mirza Sinai. Played by Tahir Raj Bhasin in an iconic performance that was his career-defining role, he befriends Saeeda and takes her in as a disciple. Slowly she re-enters society with a new name, dhol mein boliyan (meaning 'dancing girl' or 'dancer'). In his review for Rediff. com, Aishwarya Iyer called the film "a remarkable journey of hope, courage and perseverance in [the] face of adversity. [It is] a must watch for all who have been struck by cancer." In its review for "The Times of India" movie critic Nikhat Kazmi praised the film's script, music and performances by the lead star cast. The critic noted it this way: ""Dhol" moves with a graceful simplicity to tell a simple story in a simple way. But the fact that the film remains fresh and original even in a conventional milieu carries an emotional climax. A must watch for all those who have been struck by cancer. In his review for NDTV Movies, Rajeev Masand praised the film and its lead and supporting cast and called it a "remarkable achievement". He wrote: "The performances of the lead actress, her mother and her skill at conveying drama through minimalism is astonishing. And that's not even mentioning how wonderful Tahir Raj Bhasin is in his brief appearance (the same can't be said about Fardeen Khan). Dhol Dhanda Hai is modest, but extraordinary." While the film has received positive reviews, some names have been questioned for their roles in the film. Like the lead character of "Saeeda", who is portrayed by Geetika Tyagi, is not a real person and is a fictitious name made up for the movie. But in real life there was a woman named Asha, who saw this movie and after watching it she was so inspired by the dancer Saeeda character in the film that she went to Bombay and became a famous dancer named Bisnoopurna Devi. Also in real life when Asha became a well known dancer, people from her village came to see her perform. When they came to know that their old neighbour Asha is now 'Bisnoopurna', they were shocked.
